Impressionen aus dem Sudan - Woche #1

Updated: Apr 27, 2023

Sudan surprises, and that in a good way. Expectations have been there though... It takes us 22 hours of bus and boat journey from Aswan in Egypt to Wadi Halfa, the first Sudanese town after the border. From there, we start to run...

It's a sand and scree desert that changes color and form as we progress. There may not seem a lot of signs of life around, but the impression is deceptive. The moment we stop we are surrounded by flies, and here and there we find some ash-green grass or even a bush.

Blackstone mountains appear, slightly hilly road leads in curves through the landscape. Then again, the great expanse with a view towards the shimmering horizon. We can see the stages of the next day just looking down one road.

It's hot, but it's a dry heat. A heat which slows us down, but dries every drop of sweat on the skin like a hairdryer. When wind sets in, the air gets filled with fine grains of sand, a hazy and calm athmosphere blurring all conturs. It becomes greenish when we approach Abri, a 8000 inhabitant town on the banks of the Nile.
